3D Animation for a Counter-Drone Missile

BlueHalo needed to show its FE-1 Freedom Eagle counter-UAS missile in action before it could be filmed. We built the whole film in 3D, from the missile's design to a launch from a vehicle-mounted system.

The brief

Showing a Missile That Can't Be Filmed

Live firings of a missile in development can't simply be filmed and shared. BlueHalo still needed a film that showed what FE-1 is and how it would be used.

01

Restricted subject

Test footage of a weapon system is tightly controlled, so the film could not rely on real launches.

02

A system in development

The film had to show the missile and its launcher accurately without giving away more than BlueHalo wanted to share.

03

Short and clear

Forty seconds to introduce the missile, show it deployed and finish on the brand.

Our solution

A Complete Film Built in 3D

Every shot was created in 3D, which gave full control over the setting, the lighting and what was shown.

1

Technical reveal

The film opens with a wireframe view of the missile and its name, setting it up as a piece of engineering.

2

Deployed in the field

The launcher is shown at a desert outpost, on a mountain ridge and moving through forest at dusk, showing it can work in any terrain.

3

Brand finish

The film closes on a globe and the BlueHalo logo, ready for trade shows and online.

The results

A Launch Film Without a Live Firing

BlueHalo had a film that showed FE-1 in use without needing access to restricted test footage.

No live footage needed

The film shows the missile and launcher in action entirely in 3D.

4,000+

Views on YouTube

BlueHalo published the film on its own channel, where it has been watched more than 4,000 times.

Assets for reuse

The 3D scenes can be re-rendered for stills, trade show screens and future updates.

Useful lessons for businesses

3D where filming can't go

Animation gets around access, security and timing problems that would stop a shoot.

Show the setting

Placing the system in realistic terrain helps buyers picture it in service.

Build once, use often

A 3D model keeps paying back across stills, stands and later films.
